Meet the Team

Headshot of Ryan Kinsella

While completing his master’s degree in Geography at °®¶¹´«Ã½, Ryan Kinsella started as an intern with the Office of Emergency Management in August of 2023. In that role, he supported ongoing projects and demonstrated the usefulness of geographic tools and techniques through projects that utilized Geographic Information System (GIS) software and spatial thinking. In his new full-time position as GIS Specialist and Special Projects Coordinator, Ryan is focused on expanding the role of GIS in public safety on campus, identifying unique projects for the department, and gaining greater hands-on experience in emergency management through roles on the Incident Management Team (IMT) and the Emergency Response Team (ERT).

Ryan has a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and Political Science and a Master of Arts in Geography from °®¶¹´«Ã½. He first became interested in emergency management while participating in a mock emergency exercise held at the university’s Health Sciences Campus. From there, Ryan sought different opportunities to explore his new interest which included completing Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) trainings, pursuing a summer internship with the Fire Department of the City of New York’s (FDNY) Plant Operations Bureau, and receiving his Part 107 drone pilot’s license. Additionally, his graduate research thesis was titled Applications of GIS for Emergency Management at Institutions of Higher Education, which documented work he had completed for the office and investigated different ways to integrate GIS into emergency planning.

In his free time, Ryan enjoys exploring upstate New York, and travels back to his hometown on Long Island frequently to see his family and dogs.
