ME GSO Team Meeting

We held our first ME GSO team meeting to lay out our vision and plans for the 2017-2018 school year. The vision of the new team is to revive ME GSO and assist graduate students. To meet this end, we are planning to hold professional events, such as seminars and panels, social events to provide a networking opportunity between students and professionals, and mentoring for new graduate students and potentially for undergraduate to promote professional growth. Stay tuned for more exciting news.

Seminar - Leadership for Engineers

We are all called to lead independent of our job responsibilities. This talk covered several aspects of leadership that will apply to both those who are pursuing a technical or management career. There were several areas on which this seminar focused. Contrasting the difference between leadership and management, the two critical dimension of leadership, and seven "E's" of leading others was covered during this talk. Howard spoke from his leadership experience as an engineer and a general manager. The talk was followed by Informative Q&A and light refreshments.

Graduate School Discussion Panel

Graduate school can become intimidating. Our panel of faculty, career professionals and graduate students came to hear about strategies to succeed in graduate school. Topics that were discussed include, but were not limited to, successful research plan, writing professional journal papers, giving presentations in conferences and networking, and applying for jobs. 

Undergraduate students who are planning to apply for graduate school were also welcomed to attend.

Seminar on Writing Journal Paper and Reference Management by Dr. Scott Schiffres

Feb. 01, 2018

Dr. Scott Schiffres of Mechanical Engineering Department gave a lecture on conducting research and writing journal papers. Fundamentals of compelling research papers were discussed. The mechanics of starting a paper were covered, starting from an outline of the texts and figures. Tools to track references and create bibliographies (e.g. Zotero, Mendeley), and to perform literature searches (Google Scholar, ISI Web of Science, °®¶¹´«Ã½ Library Resources) were also be discussed.

Seminar: Translating Academic Skills for Non-Academic Careers by Holly Horn (Assistant Director, Fleishman Center)

Successfully applying to non-academic jobs requires effectively translating the academic skills gained through higher education into language that is relevant to industry employers. Ms. Holly Horn of the Fleishman Center discussed the non-academic job search and tips on successfully communicating one's academic skills for non-academic careers.

ANSYS Workshop by Mahdi Farahikia

April 14, 2018

ANSYS is a state-of-the-art engineering simulation software that is used by various industries. Expertise in ANSYS is a resume booster for job seekers. ME GSO held a workshop on Saturday, April 14 2018 by Mahdi Farahikia. In this workshop, fundamentals of using ANSYS such as element type selection, proper modeling, appropriate meshing, boundary condition definition, solution parameter setup, and post-processing were covered.

International Night

April 18, 2018

We celebrated our diversity and year of achievements in our cozy international night banquet. Buffet catered by Moghul and drinks (including alcoholic) was served. This was a time to engage in friendly and fun conversations with friends and faculty from the department, and an opportunity to relief the end-of-semester stress.
The event was held at Innovation Technology Center (ITC) Rotunda.
